Inflammation: The Missing Link to Transition Cow Success

By Ana Carolina Rodrigues, SSMC Animal Products Manager

Transition period challenges were primarily explained by negative energy balance causing ketosis and hypocalcemia. However, research suggests there is a central factor connecting all these events: Inflammation.

Inflammation is the body’s natural and necessary biological response, especially around calving. When it becomes excessive or prolonged, it can reduce dry matter intake, increase body fat mobilization, drive negative energy balance, and compromise milk production and fertility. Recent articles indicate that metabolic changes after calving may be consequences of excessive immune activation and inflammation.

Unfortunately, inflammation extends beyond health and impacts reproduction. Research from the University of Florida demonstrated that postpartum inflammatory diseases impair oocyte quality, embryonic development, and pregnancy maintenance for months – even after the cow appears to have clinically recovered.

Studies indicate that cows experiencing uterine disorders like metritis early in lactation are at greater risk of reoccurring uterine problems and reduced reproductive performance – even in future lactations.

This research reinforces: Transition cow success is complex and is not determined by metabolism alone. It depends on the relationship between metabolism, immunity, and inflammation control.

What does this mean for producers?

The focus should be proactive, helping cows cope more effectively with the challenges of calving, minimizing inflammation, and supporting a faster recovery.

Success during the transition period depends on a combination of factors and management practices, including maximizing dry matter intake, providing cow comfort and a healthy environment, ensuring adequate nutrition, implementing effective management, and minimizing stress.

Even when these fundamentals are well managed, cows can still experience challenges during the transition period. Providing additional support helps cows manage inflammation and improve their recovery, health, and overall performance.

We added Cow Start™ Complete to our portfolio because it fits the modern transition cow management strategy. The bolus provides supplemental calcium while supporting inflammation management and recovery. Its formulation includes a unique marine algae source containing more than 70 macro and trace minerals that perform important roles in metabolic and immune functions.

The observed results

The practical results of Cow Start™ Complete were demonstrated in a study where Holstein cows received two Cow Start™ Complete boluses at calving. They experienced a lower incidence of transition-related health disorders, including retained placentas and uterine infections. In addition, they increased rumination time, saw less body condition loss, and adapted better to early lactation. Cows given Cow Start Complete also produced 5.3 lb more milk per day during the first 100 days in milk and achieved higher pregnancy rates at first service.

Aptly named . . . Cow Start™ Complete for its comprehensive approach to transition cow support which goes beyond hypocalcemia prevention to help improve health, productivity, and fertility after calving. Two boluses at freshening means less time managing treatments.

Science continues to reshape our understanding of the transition period. Managing inflammation is essential for optimizing cow health, productivity, and fertility. We deliver solutions that not only address nutritional needs, but also help cows overcome the challenges of transition and achieve their full potential.
