This summer, Abby Lennick, a 2026 SSMC Intern, traded the classroom for cattle pens, spending her days alongside SSMC area sales manager, Patrick Schumacher, assisting beef producers execute breeding projects across North Dakota. From synchronization protocols to large-scale breeding, she experienced firsthand the work that goes into improving herd genetics and reproductive success.

Working with Patrick, Abby supported customer operations of all sizes. Her responsibilities ranged from delivering semen and supplies to administering CIDRs, loading A.I. guns, and breeding. Along the way, she gained a deeper understanding of planning, communication, and attention to detail required to keep breeding programs on track. “Working with Patrick this summer, I experienced so many aspects that I didn’t realize were so very important,” Abby said. “I saw how customers trust Patrick to help accomplish their goals.”

One of the biggest lessons Abby learned was how genetics and breeding decisions are tailored to each operation’s unique objectives. “I now understand the philosophies behind the selection of bulls for their breeding goals, while also learning about the different breeding protocols throughout the process and why producers choose a specific protocol,” she stated.

The scale of the operations also left a lasting impression. Many of the herds Abby worked with included 300 to 600 head, with some projects involving even more cattle. While every operation was different, she found one thing remained consistent. “Every producer had a different view on cattle,” Abby revealed. “Listening to different cattlemen talk about how their goals aligned with the genetics they were using really put it into perspective.” She added, “The thing that stayed consistent throughout the summer was the good people she worked with. Whether there was ample help or they were a little short-handed, the people are what stood out about each operation.”

For Patrick, helping producers develop breeding plans and select the right genetics is one of the most rewarding parts of his job. “A.I. is a unique tool because we have a near endless pool of genetics to select from,” Patrick stated. “The exciting part for me is working with the customer to find the bull that is going to accomplish what their operation is looking for. The ability to utilize genetics through A.I. when they might not otherwise be affordable is what gets many producers excited.”

He explained that successful breeding programs go beyond selecting elite genetics. “Genetics only play a successful role in an operation if we are selecting the right sires in correlation with the goals of that operation,” he assured. “If we can determine where there is room for improvement and where we want the herd to be five to ten years from now, genetics can help close that gap.”

Throughout the busy breeding season, Abby became a trusted member of the team. “Many times, Abby had to be on her own either filling tanks or delivering semen,” Patrick shared. “I was able to trust Abby to do the job right and take care of our customers.” By summer’s end, Abby had gained far more than hands-on experience. She developed a deeper understanding of the connection between genetics, reproduction, and producer success while seeing firsthand how local cooperative support helps customers achieve their goals.

At Select Sires Member Cooperative, investing in the next generation of industry leaders remains a priority. “Hands-on experience is invaluable,” Patrick said. “If we’re going to train and develop future leaders within the livestock industry, they’re going to need opportunities like this. It also helps us identify future leaders within our business.” For Abby, the internship provided a new perspective on the beef industry and the people who make it successful, proving that some of the most valuable lessons happen outside the classroom.
